Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 187 - **Form in this verse:** وَٱبْتَغُوا۟ — wa-ib'taghū · "and seek" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of ifti'al · 2nd person, masculine, plural · imperative mood اُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصِّيَامِ الرَّفَثُ اِلٰى نِسَٓائِكُمْۜ هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَاَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَهُنَّۜ عَلِمَ اللّٰهُ اَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَخْتَانُونَ اَنْفُسَكُمْ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَفَا عَنْكُمْۚ فَالْـٰٔنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَابْتَغُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْۖ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتّٰى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْاَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْاَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِۖ ثُمَّ اَتِمُّوا الصِّيَامَ اِلَى الَّيْلِۚ وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَاَنْتُمْ عَاكِفُونَۙ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِۜ تِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللّٰهِ فَلَا تَقْرَبُوهَاۜ كَذٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللّٰهُ اٰيَاتِه۪ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ Ohilla lakum laylata assiyamiarrafathu ila nisa-ikum hunna libasunlakum waantum libasun lahunna AAalima Allahuannakum kuntum takhtanoona anfusakum fatabaAAalaykum waAAafa AAankum fal-ana bashiroohunnawabtaghoo ma kataba Allahu lakum wakuloo washraboohatta yatabayyana lakumu alkhaytu al-abyadumina alkhayti al-aswadi mina alfajri thumma atimmoo assiyamaila allayli wala tubashiroohunna waantum AAakifoonafee almasajidi tilka hudoodu Allahi falataqrabooha kathalika yubayyinu Allahu ayatihilinnasi laAAallahum yattaqoon It is made lawful for you on the night of the fast to go in unto your women. They are a covering for you, and you are a covering for them. God knows that you deceived yourselves, so He turned towards you and pardoned you; so now lie with them and seek what God has prescribed for you. And eat and drink until clear to you be the white thread from the black thread of the dawn. Then complete the fast until night. And lie with them not when you remain in the places of worship. And when you pour forth from ʿArafāt, then remember God at Al-Mashʿar Al-Ḥarām. Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 213 - **Form in this verse:** بَغْيًۢا — baghyan · "(out of) jealousy" - **Grammar:** noun · masculine · accusative case · indefinite كَانَ النَّاسُ اُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً فَبَعَثَ اللّٰهُ النَّبِيّ۪نَ مُبَشِّر۪ينَ وَمُنْذِر۪ينَۖ وَاَنْزَلَ مَعَهُمُ الْكِتَابَ بِالْحَقِّ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ ف۪يمَا اخْتَلَفُوا ف۪يهِۜ وَمَا اخْتَلَفَ ف۪يهِ اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ اُو۫تُوهُ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَٓاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ بَغْياً بَيْنَهُمْۚ فَهَدَى اللّٰهُ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا لِمَا اخْتَلَفُوا ف۪يهِ مِنَ الْحَقِّ بِاِذْنِه۪ۜ وَاللّٰهُ يَهْد۪ي مَنْ يَشَٓاءُ اِلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَق۪يمٍ Kana annasu ommatan wahidatanfabaAAatha Allahu annabiyyeena mubashshireenawamunthireena waanzala maAAahumu alkitaba bilhaqqiliyahkuma bayna annasi feemaikhtalafoo feehi wama ikhtalafa feehi illa allatheenaootoohu min baAAdi ma jaat-humu albayyinatubaghyan baynahum fahada Allahu allatheena amanoolima ikhtalafoo feehi mina alhaqqi bi-ithnihiwallahu yahdee man yashao ila siratinmustaqeem Mankind was one community; then God raised up prophets as bearers of glad tidings and warners, and sent down with them the Writ with the truth, that He might judge between men concerning that wherein they differed. And there differed therein only those who were given it, after clear signs had come to them, through sectarian zealotry between them. Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 265 - **Form in this verse:** ٱبْتِغَآءَ — ib'tighāa · "seeking" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of ifti'al · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case وَمَثَلُ الَّذ۪ينَ يُنْفِقُونَ اَمْوَالَهُمُ ابْتِغَٓاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللّٰهِ وَتَثْب۪يتاً مِنْ اَنْفُسِهِمْ كَمَثَلِ جَنَّةٍ بِرَبْوَةٍ اَصَابَهَا وَابِلٌ فَاٰتَتْ اُكُلَهَا ضِعْفَيْنِۚ فَاِنْ لَمْ يُصِبْهَا وَابِلٌ فَطَلٌّۜ وَاللّٰهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَص۪يرٌ Wamathalu allatheena yunfiqoona amwalahumuibtighaa mardati Allahi watathbeetan minanfusihim kamathali jannatin birabwatin asabaha wabilunfaatat okulaha diAAfayni fa-in lam yusibhawabilun fatallun wallahu bimataAAmaloona baseer And the likeness of those who spend their wealth seeking the pleasure of God and as a confirmation of their souls, is as the likeness of a garden on high ground: a downpour fell upon it, and it yielded double fruit; and if a downpour falls not upon it, then fine rain; and God sees what you do. _https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-265.md_ ### 2. And what you spend of good, it is for yourselves. Surah Ali 'Imran, Verse 7 - **Form in this verse:** ٱبْتِغَآءَ — ib'tighāa · "seeking" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of ifti'al · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case هُوَ الَّـذ۪ٓي اَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ مِنْهُ اٰيَاتٌ مُحْكَمَاتٌ هُنَّ اُمُّ الْكِتَابِ وَاُخَرُ مُتَشَابِهَاتٌۜ فَاَمَّا الَّذ۪ينَ ف۪ي قُلُوبِهِمْ زَيْغٌ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ ابْتِغَٓاءَ الْفِتْنَةِ وَابْتِغَٓاءَ تَأْو۪يلِه۪ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ تَأْو۪يلَهُٓ اِلَّا اللّٰهُۢ وَالرَّاسِخُونَ فِي الْعِلْمِ يَقُولُونَ اٰمَنَّا بِه۪ۙ كُلٌّ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَبِّنَاۚ وَمَا يَذَّكَّرُ اِلَّٓا اُو۬لُوا الْاَلْبَابِ Huwa allathee anzala AAalayka alkitabaminhu ayatun muhkamatun hunna ommualkitabi waokharu mutashabihatun faammaallatheena fee quloobihim zayghun fayattabiAAoona matashabaha minhu ibtighaa alfitnati wabtighaata/weelihi wama yaAAlamu ta/weelahu illa Allahuwarrasikhoona fee alAAilmi yaqooloona amannabihi kullun min AAindi rabbina wama yaththakkaruilla oloo al-albab He it is that sent down upon thee the Writ; among it are explicit proofs: they are the foundation of the Writ; and others are ambiguous. Then as for those in whose hearts is deviation: they follow what is ambiguous thereof, seeking the means of denial, and seeking its interpretation. And no one knows its interpretation save God, and those firm in knowledge; they say: “We believe in it; all is from our Lord.” But only those of insight take heed. _https://quran.so/surah-ali-imran/verse-7.md_ ### 3. Surah An-Nisa, Verse 24 - **Form in this verse:** تَبْتَغُوا۟ — tabtaghū · "you seek" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of ifti'al · 2nd person, masculine, plural · present tense وَالْمُحْصَنَاتُ مِنَ النِّسَٓاءِ اِلَّا مَا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُكُمْۚ كِتَابَ اللّٰهِ عَلَيْكُمْۘ وَاُحِلَّ لَكُمْ مَا وَرَٓاءَ ذٰلِكُمْ اَنْ تَبْتَغُوا بِاَمْوَالِكُمْ مُحْصِن۪ينَ غَيْرَ مُسَافِح۪ينَۜ فَمَا اسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِه۪ مِنْهُنَّ فَاٰتُوهُنَّ اُجُورَهُنَّ فَر۪يضَةًۜ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ ف۪يمَا تَرَاضَيْتُمْ بِه۪ مِنْ بَعْدِ الْفَر۪يضَةِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَل۪يماً حَك۪يماً Walmuhsanatu mina annisa-iilla ma malakat aymanukum kitaba AllahiAAalaykum waohilla lakum ma waraa thalikuman tabtaghoo bi-amwalikum muhsineena ghayra musafiheenafama istamtaAAtum bihi minhunna faatoohunnaojoorahunna fareedatan wala junaha AAalaykumfeema taradaytum bihi min baAAdi alfareedatiinna Allaha kana AAaleeman hakeema And married women save what your right hands possess. The Writ of God is over you. But lawful to you is what is beyond that, if you seek with your wealth in chastity, not being fornicators. And what you enjoy thereby of them: give them their rewards as an obligation. Surah An-Nisa, Verse 34 - **Form in this verse:** تَبْغُوا۟ — tabghū · "seek" - **Grammar:** verb · 2nd person, masculine, plural · present tense اَلرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَٓاءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللّٰهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلٰى بَعْضٍ وَبِمَٓا اَنْفَقُوا مِنْ اَمْوَالِهِمْۜ فَالصَّالِحَاتُ قَانِتَاتٌ حَافِظَاتٌ لِلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ اللّٰهُۜ وَالّٰت۪ي تَخَافُونَ نُشُوزَهُنَّ فَعِظُوهُنَّ وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّۚ فَاِنْ اَطَعْنَكُمْ فَلَا تَبْغُوا عَلَيْهِنَّ سَب۪يلاًۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلِياًّ كَب۪يراً Arrijalu qawwamoonaAAala annisa-i bima faddalaAllahu baAAdahum AAala baAAdin wabimaanfaqoo min amwalihim fassalihatu qanitatunhafithatun lilghaybi bima hafithaAllahu wallatee takhafoonanushoozahunna faAAithoohunna wahjuroohunnafee almadajiAAi wadriboohunna fa-in ataAAnakumfala tabghoo AAalayhinna sabeelan inna Allaha kanaAAaliyyan kabeera Men are responsible for women by what God has favoured one of them over another, and by what they spend of their wealth; and the righteous women are humbly obedient, keeping unseen what God keeps. And those from whom you fear contempt: admonish them; and leave them in beds apart; and strike them. And when you are permitted, then you may hunt. And let not hatred of a people who turned you away from the inviolable place of worship move you to commit injustice. And assist one another to virtue and prudent fear; and assist not one another in sin and enmity. They said: “O our father: what more can we ask! This is our merchandise returned to us. Surah Ar-Ra'd, Verse 17 - **Form in this verse:** ٱبْتِغَآءَ — ib'tighāa · "in order to make" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of ifti'al · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case اَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مَٓاءً فَسَالَتْ اَوْدِيَةٌ بِقَدَرِهَا فَاحْتَمَلَ السَّيْلُ زَبَداً رَابِياًۜ وَمِمَّا يُوقِدُونَ عَلَيْهِ فِي النَّارِ ابْتِغَٓاءَ حِلْيَةٍ اَوْ مَتَاعٍ زَبَدٌ مِثْلُهُۜ كَذٰلِكَ يَضْرِبُ اللّٰهُ الْحَقَّ وَالْبَاطِلَۜ فَاَمَّا الزَّبَدُ فَيَذْهَبُ جُفَٓاءًۚ وَاَمَّا مَا يَنْفَعُ النَّاسَ فَيَمْكُثُ فِي الْاَرْضِۜ كَذٰلِكَ يَضْرِبُ اللّٰهُ الْاَمْثَالَۜ Anzala mina assama-i maanfasalat awdiyatun biqadariha fahtamalaassaylu zabadan rabiyan wamimma yooqidoonaAAalayhi fee annari ibtighaa hilyatinaw mataAAin zabadun mithluhu kathalika yadribuAllahu alhaqqa walbatila faammaazzabadu fayathhabu jufaan waamma mayanfaAAu annasa fayamkuthu fee al-ardi kathalikayadribu Allahu al-amthal He sends down from the sky water, and the valleys flow according to their measure, then the flood carries a swelling froth; and from what they burn in the fire seeking ornaments or tools there is a froth like it. Thus does God present truth and vanity: as for the froth, it departs as dross; and as for what is of benefit to men, it remains in the earth. Surah An-Nur, Verse 33 - **Form in this verse:** يَبْتَغُونَ — yabtaghūna · "seek" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of ifti'al · 3rd person, masculine, plural · present tense وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ نِكَاحاً حَتّٰى يُغْنِيَهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ فَضْلِه۪ۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ يَبْتَغُونَ الْكِتَابَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُكُمْ فَكَاتِبُوهُمْ اِنْ عَلِمْتُمْ ف۪يهِمْ خَيْراًۗ وَاٰتُوهُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللّٰهِ الَّـذ۪ٓي اٰتٰيكُمْۜ وَلَا تُكْرِهُوا فَتَيَاتِكُمْ عَلَى الْبِغَٓاءِ اِنْ اَرَدْنَ تَحَصُّناً لِتَبْتَغُوا عَرَضَ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۜ وَمَنْ يُكْرِهْهُنَّ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ مِنْ بَعْدِ اِكْرَاهِهِنَّ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ WalyastaAAfifi allatheena layajidoona nikahan hatta yughniyahumu Allahumin fadlihi wallatheena yabtaghoona alkitabamimma malakat aymanukum fakatiboohum inAAalimtum feehim khayran waatoohum min mali Allahiallathee atakum wala tukrihoo fatayatikumAAala albigha-i in aradna tahassunanlitabtaghoo AAarada alhayati addunyawaman yukrihhunna fa-inna Allaha min baAAdi ikrahihinnaghafoorun raheem And let abstain those who find not marriage until God enriches them out of His bounty. And those who seek the writ from among those your right hands possess: contract with them if you know good to be in them; and give to them out of the wealth God has given you. And compel not your slave-girls to whoredom, if they desire chastity[...] — seeking the enjoyment of the life of this world. Surah An-Nur, Verse 33 - **Form in this verse:** ٱلْبِغَآءِ — l-bighāi · "[the] prostitution" - **Grammar:** noun · noun-verb · masculine · genitive case وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ نِكَاحاً حَتّٰى يُغْنِيَهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ فَضْلِه۪ۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ يَبْتَغُونَ الْكِتَابَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُكُمْ فَكَاتِبُوهُمْ اِنْ عَلِمْتُمْ ف۪يهِمْ خَيْراًۗ وَاٰتُوهُمْ مِنْ مَالِ اللّٰهِ الَّـذ۪ٓي اٰتٰيكُمْۜ وَلَا تُكْرِهُوا فَتَيَاتِكُمْ عَلَى الْبِغَٓاءِ اِنْ اَرَدْنَ تَحَصُّناً لِتَبْتَغُوا عَرَضَ الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۜ وَمَنْ يُكْرِهْهُنَّ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ مِنْ بَعْدِ اِكْرَاهِهِنَّ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ WalyastaAAfifi allatheena layajidoona nikahan hatta yughniyahumu Allahumin fadlihi wallatheena yabtaghoona alkitabamimma malakat aymanukum fakatiboohum inAAalimtum feehim khayran waatoohum min mali Allahiallathee atakum wala tukrihoo fatayatikumAAala albigha-i in aradna tahassunanlitabtaghoo AAarada alhayati addunyawaman yukrihhunna fa-inna Allaha min baAAdi ikrahihinnaghafoorun raheem And let abstain those who find not marriage until God enriches them out of His bounty. And those who seek the writ from among those your right hands possess: contract with them if you know good to be in them; and give to them out of the wealth God has given you. And compel not your slave-girls to whoredom, if they desire chastity[...] — seeking the enjoyment of the life of this world. It behoved us not to take, besides Thee, any allies! And We had given him of treasures that whereof the keys weighed down a company of men endowed with strength. Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 51 - **Form in this verse:** ٱبْتَغَيْتَ — ib'taghayta · "you desire" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of ifti'al · 2nd person, masculine, singular · past tense تُرْج۪ي مَنْ تَشَٓاءُ مِنْهُنَّ وَتُــْٔـو۪ٓي اِلَيْكَ مَنْ تَشَٓاءُۜ وَمَنِ ابْتَغَيْتَ مِمَّنْ عَزَلْتَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكَۜ ذٰلِكَ اَدْنٰٓى اَنْ تَقَرَّ اَعْيُنُهُنَّ وَلَا يَحْزَنَّ وَيَرْضَيْنَ بِمَٓا اٰتَيْتَهُنَّ كُلُّهُنَّۜ وَاللّٰهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا ف۪ي قُلُوبِكُمْۜ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ عَل۪يماً حَل۪يماً Turjee man tashao minhunna watu/weeilayka man tashao wamani ibtaghayta mimman AAazalta falajunaha AAalayka thalika adna an taqarraaAAyunuhunna wala yahzanna wayardayna bimaataytahunna kulluhunna wallahu yaAAlamu mafee quloobikum wakana Allahu AAaleeman haleema Thou deferest whom thou wilt of them, and thou takest to thee whom thou wilt; and whom thou desirest of those thou hast set aside: there is no blame upon thee. That tends to the comfort of their eyes, and that they grieve not, and that they be pleased with what thou givest them; and God knows what is in your hearts, and God is knowing and clement. _https://quran.so/surah-al-ahzab/verse-51.md_ ### 35. Surah Fatir, Verse 12 - **Form in this verse:** لِتَبْتَغُوا۟ — litabtaghū · "so that you may seek" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of ifti'al · 2nd person, masculine, plural · present tense وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْبَحْرَانِۗ هٰذَا عَذْبٌ فُرَاتٌ سَٓائِـغٌ شَرَابُهُ وَهٰذَا مِلْحٌ اُجَاجٌۜ وَمِنْ كُلٍّ تَأْكُلُونَ لَحْماً طَرِياًّ وَتَسْتَخْرِجُونَ حِلْيَةً تَلْبَسُونَهَاۚ وَتَرَى الْفُلْكَ ف۪يهِ مَوَاخِرَ لِتَبْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِه۪ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ Wama yastawee albahranihatha AAathbun furatun sa-ighun sharabuhuwahatha milhun ojajun wamin kullinta/kuloona lahman tariyyan watastakhrijoona hilyatantalbasoonaha watara alfulka feehi mawakhiralitabtaghoo min fadlihi walaAAallakum tashkuroon And not alike are the two seas: one is fresh and sweet, delicious to drink, and one is salty and bitter. And from each you eat succulent flesh, and extract ornaments which you wear. Surah Sad, Verse 22 - **Form in this verse:** بَغَىٰ — baghā · "has wronged" - **Grammar:** verb · 3rd person, masculine, singular · past tense اِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلٰى دَاوُ۫دَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ قَالُوا لَا تَخَفْۚ خَصْمَانِ بَغٰى بَعْضُنَا عَلٰى بَعْضٍ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَنَا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَاهْدِنَٓا اِلٰى سَوَٓاءِ الصِّرَاطِ Ith dakhaloo AAala dawoodafafaziAAa minhum qaloo la takhaf khasmanibagha baAAduna AAala baAAdinfahkum baynana bilhaqqi walatushtit wahdina ila sawa-iassirat When they entered upon David, and he was in terror of them, they said: “Fear thou not — two litigants, one of whom has oppressed the other. Surah Sad, Verse 24 - **Form in this verse:** لَيَبْغِى — layabghī · "certainly oppress" - **Grammar:** verb · 3rd person, masculine, singular · present tense قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ اِلٰى نِعَاجِه۪ۜ وَاِنَّ كَث۪يراً مِنَ الْخُلَطَٓاءِ لَيَبْغ۪ي بَعْضُهُمْ عَلٰى بَعْضٍ اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَقَل۪يلٌ مَا هُمْۜ وَظَنَّ دَاوُ۫دُ اَنَّمَا فَتَنَّاهُ فَاسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُ وَخَرَّ رَا‌كِعاً وَاَنَابَ Qala laqad thalamakabisu-ali naAAjatika ila niAAajihi wa-innakatheeran mina alkhulata-i layabghee baAAduhum AAalabaAAdin illa allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati waqaleelun mahum wathanna dawoodu annama fatannahufastaghfara rabbahu wakharra rakiAAan waanab Said he: “He has wronged thee in asking thy ewe for his ewes; and many among acquaintances oppress one another save those who heed warning and do righteous deeds — and few are they.” And David understood that We had but subjected him to means of denial; and he asked forgiveness of his Lord, and fell down humbly and repented. _https://quran.so/surah-sad/verse-24.md_ ### 38. Surah Ash-Shuraa, Verse 14 - **Form in this verse:** بَغْيًۢا — baghyan · "(out of) rivalry" - **Grammar:** noun · masculine · accusative case · indefinite وَمَا تَفَرَّقُٓوا اِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَٓاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْياً بَيْنَهُمْۜ وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِنْ رَبِّكَ اِلٰٓى اَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى لَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمْۜ وَاِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ اُو۫رِثُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ لَف۪ي شَكٍّ مِنْهُ مُر۪يبٍ Wama tafarraqoo illa minbaAAdi ma jaahumu alAAilmu baghyan baynahum walawlakalimatun sabaqat min rabbika ila ajalin musamman laqudiyabaynahum wa-inna allatheena oorithoo alkitaba minbaAAdihim lafee shakkin minhu mureeb And they became divided only after knowledge came to them, through sectarian zealotry between them. And were it not for a word that preceded from thy Lord to a stated term, it would have been concluded between them. Surah Al-Jathiyah, Verse 17 - **Form in this verse:** بَغْيًۢا — baghyan · "(out of) envy" - **Grammar:** noun · masculine · accusative case · indefinite وَاٰتَيْنَاهُمْ بَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْاَمْرِۚ فَمَا اخْتَلَفُٓوا اِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَٓاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُۙ بَغْياً بَيْنَهُمْۜ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقْض۪ي بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ ف۪يمَا كَانُوا ف۪يهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ Waataynahum bayyinatinmina al-amri fama ikhtalafoo illa min baAAdi majaahumu alAAilmu baghyan baynahum inna rabbaka yaqdeebaynahum yawma alqiyamati feema kanoo feehiyakhtalifoon And We gave them clear signs of the command; and they differed only after knowledge had come to them, through sectarian zealotry between them. Surah Al-Fath, Verse 29 - **Form in this verse:** يَبْتَغُونَ — yabtaghūna · "seeking" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of ifti'al · 3rd person, masculine, plural · present tense مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللّٰهِۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ مَعَهُٓ اَشِدَّٓاءُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَٓاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ تَرٰيهُمْ رُكَّعاً سُجَّداً يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلاً مِنَ اللّٰهِ وَرِضْوَاناًۘ س۪يمَاهُمْ ف۪ي وُجُوهِهِمْ مِنْ اَثَرِ السُّجُودِۜ ذٰلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِي التَّوْرٰيةِۚۛ وَمَثَلُهُمْ فِي الْاِنْج۪يلِ۠ۛ كَزَرْعٍ اَخْرَجَ شَطْـَٔهُ۫ فَاٰزَرَهُ فَاسْتَغْلَظَ فَاسْتَوٰى عَلٰى سُوقِه۪ يُعْجِبُ الزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغ۪يظَ بِهِمُ الْكُفَّارَۜ وَعَدَ اللّٰهُ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ مِنْهُمْ مَغْفِرَةً وَاَجْراً عَظ۪يماً Muhammadun rasoolu Allahi wallatheenamaAAahu ashiddao AAala alkuffari ruhamaobaynahum tarahum rukkaAAan sujjadan yabtaghoona fadlanmina Allahi waridwanan seemahum feewujoohihim min athari assujoodi thalika mathaluhumfee attawrati wamathaluhum fee al-injeelikazarAAin akhraja shat-ahu faazarahu fastaghlathafastawa AAala sooqihi yuAAjibu azzurraAAaliyagheetha bihimu alkuffara waAAada Allahuallatheena amanoo waAAamiloo assalihatiminhum maghfiratan waajran AAatheema Muḥammad is the messenger of God. And those with him are hard against the atheists, merciful among themselves — thou seest them lowly, in submission, seeking favour from God and approval, their mark on their faces of the effects of the Submission — that is their likeness in the Torah. And their likeness in the Gospel is like a seed that put forth its shoot, and strengthens it, and established itself upon its stem pleasing the sowers, that by them He might enrage the atheists. Surah Al-Hadid, Verse 27 - **Form in this verse:** ٱبْتِغَآءَ — ib'tighāa · "seeking" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of ifti'al · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case ثُمَّ قَفَّيْنَا عَلٰٓى اٰثَارِهِمْ بِرُسُلِنَا وَقَفَّيْنَا بِع۪يسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَاٰتَيْنَاهُ الْاِنْج۪يلَ وَجَعَلْنَا ف۪ي قُلُوبِ الَّذ۪ينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ رَأْفَةً وَرَحْمَةًۜ وَرَهْبَانِيَّةًۨ ابْتَدَعُوهَا مَا كَتَبْنَاهَا عَلَيْهِمْ اِلَّا ابْتِغَٓاءَ رِضْوَانِ اللّٰهِ فَمَا رَعَوْهَا حَقَّ رِعَايَـتِهَاۚ فَاٰتَيْنَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا مِنْهُمْ اَجْرَهُمْۚ وَكَث۪يرٌ مِنْهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ Thumma qaffayna AAala atharihimbirusulina waqaffayna biAAeesa ibni maryamawaataynahu al-injeela wajaAAalna fee quloobiallatheena ittabaAAoohu ra/fatan warahmatan warahbaniyyatanibtadaAAooha ma katabnaha AAalayhimilla ibtighaa ridwani Allahifama raAAawha haqqa riAAayatihafaatayna allatheena amanoo minhumajrahum wakatheerun minhum fasiqoon Then We sent, following in their footsteps, Our messengers; and We sent, following, Jesus, son of Mary. And We gave him the Gospel, and We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy. But monasticism, they invented it; We did not prescribe it for them — only the seeking of the approval of God; but they did not observe it with the observance due it. Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Verse 1 - **Form in this verse:** وَٱبْتِغَآءَ — wa-ib'tighāa · "and (to) seek" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of ifti'al · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا عَدُوّ۪ي وَعَدُوَّكُمْ اَوْلِيَٓاءَ تُلْقُونَ اِلَيْهِمْ بِالْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا بِمَا جَٓاءَكُمْ مِنَ الْحَقِّۚ يُخْرِجُونَ الرَّسُولَ وَاِيَّاكُمْ اَنْ تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللّٰهِ رَبِّكُمْۜ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَاداً ف۪ي سَب۪يل۪ي وَابْتِغَٓاءَ مَرْضَات۪ي تُسِرُّونَ اِلَيْهِمْ بِالْمَوَدَّةِۗ وَاَنَا۬ اَعْلَمُ بِمَٓا اَخْفَيْتُمْ وَمَٓا اَعْلَنْتُمْۜ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْهُ مِنْكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَٓاءَ السَّب۪يلِ Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola tattakhithoo AAaduwwee waAAaduwwakum awliyaatulqoona ilayhim bilmawaddati waqad kafaroo bima jaakummina alhaqqi yukhrijoona arrasoola wa-iyyakuman tu/minoo billahi rabbikum in kuntum kharajtumjihadan fee sabeelee wabtighaa mardateetusirroona ilayhim bilmawaddati waana aAAlamu bimaakhfaytum wama aAAlantum waman yafAAalhu minkum faqad dallasawaa assabeel O you who heed warning: take not My enemy and your enemy as allies, extending to them love, when they have denied that which has come to you of the truth — they, turning out the Messenger and you because you believe in God, your Lord, if you go forth to strive in My cause and seeking My pleasure — showing them love in secret. Surah Al-Muzzammil, Verse 20 - **Form in this verse:** يَبْتَغُونَ — yabtaghūna · "seeking" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of ifti'al · 3rd person, masculine, plural · present tense اِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ اَنَّكَ تَقُومُ اَدْنٰى مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ الَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَٓائِفَةٌ مِنَ الَّذ۪ينَ مَعَكَۜ وَاللّٰهُ يُقَدِّرُ الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَۜ عَلِمَ اَنْ لَنْ تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْرَؤُ۫ا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْاٰنِۜ عَلِمَ اَنْ سَيَكُونُ مِنْكُمْ مَرْضٰىۙ وَاٰخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْاَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللّٰهِۙ وَاٰخَرُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۘ فَاقْرَؤُ۫ا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُۙ وَاَق۪يمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ وَاَقْرِضُوا اللّٰهَ قَرْضاً حَسَناًۜ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِاَنْفُسِكُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ هُوَ خَيْراً وَاَعْظَمَ اَجْراًۜ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللّٰهَۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ Inna rabbaka yaAAlamu annaka taqoomu adnamin thuluthayi allayli wanisfahu wathuluthahu wata-ifatunmina allatheena maAAaka wallahu yuqaddiruallayla wannahara AAalima an lan tuhsoohufataba AAalaykum faqraoo ma tayassara minaalqur-ani AAalima an sayakoonu minkum marda waakharoonayadriboona fee al-ardi yabtaghoona min fadliAllahi waakharoona yuqatiloona fee sabeeliAllahi faqraoo ma tayassara minhu waaqeemooassalata waatoo azzakatawaaqridoo Allaha qardan hasanan wamatuqaddimoo li-anfusikum min khayrin tajidoohu AAinda Allahihuwa khayran waaAAthama ajran wastaghfirooAllaha inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem Thy Lord knows that thou standest nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half of it, or a third of it, as does a number of those with thee. And God determines the night and the day. He knew that you would not calculate it, and has turned towards you: — so recite what is made easy of the Qur’an. He knows that there will be some sick among you, and others travelling in the earth in search of the bounty of God, and others fighting in the cause of God: — so recite what is made easy thereof, and uphold the duty, and render the purity, and lend to God a goodly loan. And what good you send ahead for your souls — you will find it with God, better and greater in reward.
