- **Meaning:** to seal/imprint/print/stamp/impress/brand/fashion, make to be dirty, rusted, covering over a thing and securing oneself from a thing entering it, adaptation/disposition to a thing, become sluggish/lazy/indolent, to disgrace/dishonour, to have no penetrative energy, i.e. no sharpness of mind like the sword covered with much rust, load well/heavily, tabba'a - to impress strongly.

فَبِمَا نَقْضِهِمْ م۪يثَاقَهُمْ وَكُفْرِهِمْ بِاٰيَاتِ اللّٰهِ وَقَتْلِهِمُ الْاَنْبِيَٓاءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ وَقَوْلِهِمْ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌۜ بَلْ طَبَعَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهَا بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ اِلَّا قَل۪يلاًۖ

Fabima naqdihim meethaqahumwakufrihim bi-ayati Allahi waqatlihimual-anbiyaa bighayri haqqin waqawlihim quloobunaghulfun bal tabaAAa Allahu AAalayhabikufrihim fala yu/minoona illa qaleela

So, because of their violation of their agreement, and their denial of the proofs of God, and their killing of the prophets without cause, and their saying: “Our hearts are covered,” — nay, God sealed them for their denial, so they do not believe save a few —

اَوَلَمْ يَهْدِ لِلَّذ۪ينَ يَرِثُونَ الْاَرْضَ مِنْ بَعْدِ اَهْلِهَٓا اَنْ لَوْ نَشَٓاءُ اَصَبْنَاهُمْ بِذُنُوبِهِمْۚ وَنَطْبَعُ عَلٰى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ

Awa lam yahdi lillatheena yarithoonaal-arda min baAAdi ahliha an law nashao asabnahumbithunoobihim wanatbaAAu AAala quloobihimfahum la yasmaAAoon

Is it not guidance to those who inherit the land after its people that, if We willed, We would strike them for their transgressions, and seal their hearts so they hear not?

Tilka alqura naqussu AAalaykamin anba-iha walaqad jaat-hum rusuluhum bilbayyinatifama kanoo liyu/minoo bima kaththaboomin qablu kathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAalaquloobi alkafireen

Those cities: We relate some of their reports to thee; and their messengers came to them with clear signs, but they were not to believe in what they had denied before; thus God seals the hearts of the false claimers of guidance.

They are content to be with those who remain; and their hearts are sealed, so they understand not.

Innama assabeelu AAalaallatheena yasta/thinoonaka wahum aghniyaoradoo bi-an yakoonoo maAAa alkhawalifi watabaAAaAllahu AAala quloobihim fahum la yaAAlamoon

The path is but against those who ask leave of thee when they are sufficient, content to be with those who remain; and God has sealed their hearts, so they understand not.

### 10. Surah Yunus, Verse 74

Thumma baAAathna min baAAdihi rusulanila qawmihim fajaoohum bilbayyinatifama kanoo liyu/minoo bima kaththaboobihi min qablu kathalika natbaAAu AAalaquloobi almuAAtadeen

Then raised We up, after him, messengers to their people, and they came to them with clear signs; but they were not to believe in what they had denied before; thus do We seal the hearts of the transgressors.

Ola-ika allatheena tabaAAaAllahu AAala quloobihim wasamAAihim waabsarihimwaola-ika humu alghafiloon

Those are they whose hearts God has sealed, and their hearing and their sight; and it is they who are the heedless;

### 40. Surah Ghafir, Verse 35

Allatheena yujadiloona fee ayatiAllahi bighayri sultanin atahum kaburamaqtan AAinda Allahi waAAinda allatheena amanookathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAala kulliqalbi mutakabbirin jabbar

“Those who dispute concerning the proofs of God without an authority having come to them; great is the hatred in the sight of God and in the sight of those who heed warning; thus does God seal every proud and tyrannical heart.”

Waminhum man yastamiAAu ilayka hattaitha kharajoo min AAindika qaloo lillatheenaootoo alAAilma matha qala anifan ola-ikaallatheena tabaAAa Allahu AAalaquloobihim wattabaAAoo ahwaahum

And among them are some who listen to thee. When they have gone forth from thy presence, they say to those who have been given knowledge: “What said he just now?” Those are they whose hearts God sealed, and they follow their vain desires.

### 63. Surah Al-Munafiqun, Verse 3

Thalika bi-annahum amanoothumma kafaroo fatubiAAa AAala quloobihim fahum layafqahoon

For it is that they believed, then denied! Then were their hearts sealed, and they understand not.
