- **Meaning:** To guard/keep, keep safely/protect/take care of a person or thing, defend a person or thing, pay frequent attention to a person or thing, to mind or be regardful of one's things, have compassion or affection for a person, to undertake/superintend/manage one's affairs, retire to a distance, to leave and go against, take care of and preserve (the tie of kindred), draw towards oneself or compress and guard one's possession, to surround/encompass a thing, build a wall around a thing, have within one's compass or power and care a thing or affair, monopolize a thing, endeavour to induce a person to turn or incline, endeavour to turn a person by deceit or guile (namely in a matter that he desired of him and which he refused him), surround/encompass/environ/enclose/hemm in a person or thing, to encircle or beset the sides of a person or thing, to have something or someone in one's grasp or power, to destroy or cause destruction, beset a thing on every side (and leaving no escape), to take a thing entirely to oneself and debar others from it, to comprehend or know a thing altogether or in all its modes or circumstances, to know a thing extrinsically and intrisically, attain the utmost particular of a thing, have a comprehensive and complete knowledge of a thing, to pursue a course or thing by prudence or precaution or good judgement, to use precaution, take the sure course, to seek the most successful means, take the surest method.

Aw kasayyibin mina assama-ifeehi thulumatun waraAAdun wabarqunyajAAaloona asabiAAahum fee athanihim mina assawaAAiqihathara almawti wallahu muheetunbilkafireen

Or like a thundercloud from the sky wherein is darkness, and thunder, and lightning: they put their fingers in their ears against the thunderbolts in fear of death; but God encompasses the false claimers of guidance.

Verily, whoso earns evil, and his offences have encompassed him: those are the companions of the Fire; therein they abide eternally.

Allahu la ilaha illahuwa alhayyu alqayyoomu la ta/khuthuhusinatun wala nawmun lahu ma fee assamawatiwama fee al-ardi man tha allatheeyashfaAAu AAindahu illa bi-ithnihi yaAAlamu mabayna aydeehim wama khalfahum wala yuheetoonabishay-in min AAilmihi illa bima shaawasiAAa kursiyyuhu assamawati wal-ardawala yaooduhu hifthuhumawahuwa alAAaliyyu alAAatheem

God, there is no god save He, the Living, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him; to Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth — who will intercede with Him save by His leave? He knows what is before them and what is after them, and they encompass not anything of His knowledge save what He wills. His Throne overspreads the heavens and the earth, and the preservation thereof wearies Him not; and He is the Exalted, the Great.

In tamsaskum hasanatun tasu/humwa-in tusibkum sayyi-atun yafrahoo bihawa-in tasbiroo watattaqoo la yadurrukumkayduhum shay-an inna Allaha bima yaAAmaloona muheet

If good touches you, it vexes them; and if evil befalls you, they exult thereat. But if you are patient and in prudent fear, their plan will not harm you at all; God encompasses what they do.

Yastakhfoona mina annasi walayastakhfoona mina Allahi wahuwa maAAahum ithyubayyitoona ma la yarda mina alqawli wakanaAllahu bima yaAAmaloona muheeta

They conceal from men, but they conceal not from God; and He is with them when they plan by night what is displeasing to Him of speech; and God encompasses what they do.

And be not like those who come forth from their homes boastfully, and to be seen of men, and turn away from the path of God; and God encompasses what they do.

And among them is he who says: “Grant thou me leave, and subject thou me not to means of denial.” Save into the means of denial have they fallen; and Gehenna encompasses the false claimers of guidance.

هُوَ الَّذ۪ي يُسَيِّرُكُمْ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِۜ حَتّٰٓى اِذَا كُنْتُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِۚ وَجَرَيْنَ بِهِمْ بِر۪يحٍ طَيِّبَةٍ وَفَرِحُوا بِهَا جَٓاءَتْهَا ر۪يحٌ عَاصِفٌ وَجَٓاءَهُمُ الْمَوْجُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَكَانٍ وَظَنُّٓوا اَنَّهُمْ اُح۪يطَ بِهِمْۙ دَعَوُا اللّٰهَ مُخْلِص۪ينَ لَهُ الدّ۪ينَۚ لَئِنْ اَنْجَيْتَنَا مِنْ هٰذِه۪ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الشَّاكِر۪ينَ

Huwa allathee yusayyirukum feealbarri walbahri hatta ithakuntum fee alfulki wajarayna bihim bireehin tayyibatinwafarihoo biha jaat-ha reehunAAasifun wajaahumu almawju min kulli makaninwathannoo annahum oheeta bihimdaAAawoo Allaha mukhliseena lahu addeenala-in anjaytana min hathihi lanakoonanna mina ashshakireen

He it is that lets you travel in the earth and the sea; when you have boarded ships and sailed by them with a good breeze and exulted thereat–– A tempest wind came upon them, and the waves came on them from every side, and they thought they were encompassed therein; they called to God, sincere to Him in doctrine: “If Thou deliver us from this, we will be among the grateful!”

### 10. Surah Yunus, Verse 39

Bal kaththaboo bima lam yuheetoobiAAilmihi walamma ya/tihim ta/weeluhu kathalika kaththabaallatheena min qablihim fanthurkayfa kana AAaqibatu aththalimeen

The truth is, they have denied what they compassed not in knowledge, and whose interpretation has not yet come to them. Thus denied those before them. Then see thou how was the final outcome of the wrongdoers.

Wa-ila madyana akhahumshuAAayban qala ya qawmi oAAbudoo Allaha malakum min ilahin ghayruhu wala tanqusooalmikyala walmeezana innee arakumbikhayrin wa-innee akhafu AAalaykum AAathaba yawminmuheet

And to Madyan, their brother Shuʿayb: he said: “O my people: serve God; you have no god but He; so decrease not the measure and the balance. I see you in affluence, but I fear for you the punishment of an encompassing day.”

Qala ya qawmi arahteeaAAazzu AAalaykum mina Allahi wattakhathtumoohuwaraakum thihriyyan inna rabbee bimataAAmaloona muheet

He said: “O my people: is my family more respected for power by you than God? And Him have you put behind your backs. My Lord encompasses what you do.”

Qala lan orsilahu maAAakum hattatu/tooni mawthiqan mina Allahi lata/tunnanee bihi illaan yuhata bikum falamma atawhu mawthiqahum qalaAllahu AAala ma naqoolu wakeel

He said: “I will not send him with you until you give me a solemn oath before God that you will bring him to me save that you be surrounded.” And when they had brought him their solemn oath, he said: “God is guardian over what we say.”

### 17. Surah Al-Isra, Verse 60

وَاِذْ قُلْنَا لَكَ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ اَحَاطَ بِالنَّاسِۜ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا الرُّءْيَا الَّت۪ٓي اَرَيْنَاكَ اِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِلنَّاسِ وَالشَّجَرَةَ الْمَلْعُونَةَ فِي الْقُرْاٰنِۜ وَنُخَوِّفُهُمْۙ فَمَا يَز۪يدُهُمْ اِلَّا طُغْيَاناً كَب۪يراً۟

Wa-ith qulna laka inna rabbakaahata binnasi wama jaAAalnaarru/ya allatee araynaka illafitnatan linnasi washshajarataalmalAAoonata fee alqur-ani wanukhawwifuhum famayazeeduhum illa tughyanan kabeera

And when We said to thee: “Thy Lord encompasses mankind[...],” and We made the vision which We showed thee only a means of denial for mankind, and also the accursed tree in the Qur’an. And We put them in dread, but it increases them not save in great inordinacy.

### 18. Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 29

وَقُلِ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ فَمَنْ شَٓاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِنْ وَمَنْ شَٓاءَ فَلْيَكْفُرْۙ اِنَّٓا اَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّالِم۪ينَ نَاراًۙ اَحَاطَ بِهِمْ سُرَادِقُهَاۜ وَاِنْ يَسْتَغ۪يثُوا يُغَاثُوا بِمَٓاءٍ كَالْمُهْلِ يَشْوِي الْوُجُوهَۜ بِئْسَ الشَّرَابُۜ وَسَٓاءَتْ مُرْتَفَقاً

Waquli alhaqqu min rabbikum faman shaafalyu/min waman shaa falyakfur inna aAAtadnaliththalimeena naran ahatabihim suradiquha wa-in yastagheethoo yughathoobima-in kalmuhli yashwee alwujooha bi/sa ashsharabuwasaat murtafaqa

And say thou: “The truth is from your Lord; then whoso wills, let him believe; and whoso wills, let him deny.” We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire, its walls encompassing them; and if they seek succour, they will be given succour by water like molten brass burning the faces — evil the drink, and evil the resting-place.

### 18. Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 42

Waoheeta bithamarihi faasbahayuqallibu kaffayhi AAala ma anfaqa feehawahiya khawiyatun AAala AAurooshihawayaqoolu ya laytanee lam oshrik birabbee ahada

And encompassed were his fruits; and he began to wring his hands for all that he had spent therein, but it was desolate and in ruins. And he said: “Would that I had not ascribed a partnership with my Lord to anyone!”

When they have come, He will say: “Did you deny My proofs, when you had not encompassed them in knowledge? Or what was it you did?”

They ask thee to hasten the punishment! And Gehenna will encompass the false claimers of guidance

Allahu allathee khalaqa sabAAasamawatin wamina al-ardi mithlahunnayatanazzalu al-amru baynahunna litaAAlamoo anna AllahaAAala kulli shay-in qadeerun waanna Allaha qad ahatabikulli shay-in AAilma

God is He who created seven heavens — and of the earth their like — the command descending between them, that you might know that God is over all things powerful, and that God has encompassed all things in knowledge.
