- **Meaning:** To burn by pulling in the fire, scorch. To file a thing, to rub one part of a thing with another, to grind (the teeth), make a grating sound by grinding the teeth, eat to the uttermost, to be evil in disposition, make a mark or impression upon a thing with fire, burn a person or thing with fire, to burn a thing or person repeatedly or frequently, cause burning pain, to afflict/distress/annoy/molest/hurt a person or people, to blame or upbraid or reproach a person, detract from one's reputation, nip/shrink/shrivel/blast herbage (cold air or weather), destroy/perish a person or thing, to burn or become burnt.

Ayawaddu ahadukum an takoona lahujannatun min nakheelin waaAAnabin tajree min tahtihaal-anharu lahu feeha min kulli aththamaratiwaasabahu alkibaru walahu thurriyyatun duAAafaofaasabaha iAAsarun feehi narun fahtaraqatkathalika yubayyinu Allahu lakumu al-ayatilaAAallakum tatafakkaroon

Would one of you wish to have a garden of date-palms and grapevines, beneath which rivers flow, he having every fruit therein?[...]. And old age befell him, and he had weak progeny, and a cyclone wherein was fire befell it, and it was burned up. Thus does God make plain to you the proofs, that you might give thought.

### 3. Surah Ali 'Imran, Verse 181

Laqad samiAAa Allahu qawla allatheenaqaloo inna Allaha faqeerun wanahnu aghniyaonsanaktubu ma qaloo waqatlahumu al-anbiyaabighayri haqqin wanaqoolu thooqoo AAathabaalhareeq

God has heard the saying of those who say: “God is poor, and we are rich.” We will record what they say, and their killing of the prophets without cause; (and We will say: “Taste the punishment of the consuming fire

### 20. Surah Taha, Verse 97

Qala fathhab fa-innalaka fee alhayati an taqoola la misasawa-inna laka mawAAidan lan tukhlafahu wanthurila ilahika allathee thaltaAAalayhi AAakifan lanuharriqannahu thummalanansifannahu fee alyammi nasfa

He said: “Then go thou, for in this life it is for thee to say: ‘Outcast!’ And there is for thee an appointment thou canst not fail to keep. And look thou upon thy god to which thou remainedst devoted! We will burn it; then will we scatter it in the sea with a blast.”

### 21. Surah Al-Anbiya, Verse 68

### 22. Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 9

Thaniya AAitfihi liyudillaAAan sabeeli Allahi lahu fee addunyakhizyun wanutheequhu yawma alqiyamati AAathabaalhareeq

Turning aside proudly to lead away from the path of God. For him in the World is disgrace; and on the Day of Resurrection We will let him taste the punishment of the consuming fire:

### 22. Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 22

Kullama aradoo an yakhrujoominha min ghammin oAAeedoo feeha wathooqooAAathaba alhareeq

Whenever they desire to come out therefrom — from anguish — they will be returned thereto: “And taste the punishment of the consuming fire!”

### 29. Surah Al-'Ankabut, Verse 24

Fama kana jawabaqawmihi illa an qaloo oqtuloohu aw harriqoohufaanjahu Allahu mina annari inna feethalika laayatin liqawmin yu/minoon

Then the response of his people was only that they said: “Kill him, or burn him!” But God delivered him from the fire; in that are proofs for people who believe.

### 85. Surah Al-Buruj, Verse 10

اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ فَتَنُوا الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَتُوبُوا فَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابُ الْحَر۪يقِۜ

Inna allatheena fatanoo almu/mineenawalmu/minati thumma lam yatooboo falahum AAathabujahannama walahum AAathabu alhareeq

Those who subject the believing men and the believing women to means of denial, then repent not: they have the punishment of Gehenna — and they have the punishment of the consuming fire.
