Those who break the covenant with God after its agreement, and sever what God commanded to be joined, and work corruption in the land; it is they who are the losers.

And they say: “The Fire will not touch us save days numbered.” Say thou: “Have you taken a covenant with God — for God will not fail in His covenant — or do you ascribe to God what you know not?”

Wa-ithi ibtala ibraheemarabbuhu bikalimatin faatammahunna qala innee jaAAilukalinnasi imaman qala wamin thurriyyateeqala la yanalu AAahdee aththalimeen

And when his Lord tried Abraham with words and he fulfilled them, He said: “I will make thee a leader for mankind.” Said he: “And of my progeny?” He said: “My covenant does not reach the wrongdoers.”

Wa-ith jaAAalna albayta mathabatanlinnasi waamnan wattakhithoo minmaqami ibraheema musallan waAAahidnaila ibraheema wa-ismaAAeela an tahhirabaytiya litta-ifeena walAAakifeenawarrukkaAAi assujood

And when We made the house a meeting place for mankind, and a place of security — and make from the station of Abraham a place of duty — and We made a covenant with Abraham and Ishmael: “Purify My house for those who walk around, and those who remain, and the lowly and the submitting.”

Laysa albirra an tuwalloo wujoohakum qibalaalmashriqi walmaghribi walakinna albirra man amanabillahi walyawmi al-akhiri walmala-ikatiwalkitabi wannabiyyeena waataalmala AAala hubbihi thawee alqurbawalyatama walmasakeena wabnaalssabeeli wassa-ileena wafee arriqabiwaaqama assalata waataazzakata walmoofoona biAAahdihim ithaAAahadoo wassabireena fee alba/sa-iwaddarra-i waheena alba/si ola-ikaallatheena sadaqoo waola-ika humualmuttaqoon

It is not virtue that you turn your faces towards the East and the West. But virtue is: one who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Writ, and the prophets, and gives wealth in spite of love of it to relatives, and the fatherless, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and those who ask, and to manumit slaves; and who upholds the duty, and renders the purity; and those who keep their covenant when they make a covenant; and the patient in affliction and adversity, and during conflict: those are they who are sincere; and it is they who are those of prudent fear.

Inna allatheena yashtaroona biAAahdiAllahi waaymanihim thamanan qaleelan ola-ikala khalaqa lahum fee al-akhirati walayukallimuhumu Allahu wala yanthuruilayhim yawma alqiyamati wala yuzakkeehim walahumAAathabun aleem

Those who sell the covenant of God and their oaths at a cheap price: those have no portion in the Hereafter; and God will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He increase them in purity. And they have a painful punishment.

Allatheena qaloo inna AllahaAAahida ilayna alla nu/mina lirasoolin hattaya/tiyana biqurbanin ta/kuluhu annaruqul qad jaakum rusulun min qablee bilbayyinatiwabillathee qultum falima qataltumoohum in kutum sadiqeen

Those who said: “God has made a covenant with us, that we believe not any messenger until he brings us an offering consumed by fire.” Say thou: “There came to you messengers before me with clear signs, and with what you say; why then did you kill them, if you be truthful?”

Wala taqraboo mala alyateemiilla billatee hiya ahsanu hattayablugha ashuddahu waawfoo alkayla walmeezana bilqistila nukallifu nafsan illa wusAAaha wa-ithaqultum faAAdiloo walaw kana tha qurbawabiAAahdi Allahi awfoo thalikum wassakumbihi laAAallakum tathakkaroon

“And approach not the property of the fatherless save with what is better before he reaches his maturity; and fulfil the measure and the balance with equity,” — We burden not any soul save to its capacity — “and when you speak, be just (though he be a relative); and the covenant of God fulfil; — that He commanded you, that you might take heed.”

Walamma waqaAAa AAalayhimu arrijzuqaloo ya moosa odAAu lana rabbaka bimaAAahida AAindaka la-in kashafta AAanna arrijzalanu/minanna laka walanursilanna maAAaka banee isra-eel

And when the scourge came upon them, they said: “O Moses: call thou to thy Lord for us by what He covenanted with thee: if thou remove the scourge from us, we will believe thee, and send the children of Israel with thee.”

اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ عَاهَدْتُمْ مِنَ الْمُشْرِك۪ينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـٔاً وَلَمْ يُظَاهِرُوا عَلَيْكُمْ اَحَداً فَاَتِمُّٓوا اِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ اِلٰى مُدَّتِهِمْۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّق۪ينَ

Illa allatheena AAahadtummina almushrikeena thumma lam yanqusookum shay-an walam yuthahirooAAalaykum ahadan faatimmoo ilayhim AAahdahum ilamuddatihim inna Allaha yuhibbu almuttaqeen

Save the idolaters with whom you made a covenant then who have not been deficient towards you in anything, nor assisted anyone against you; so fulfil to them your covenant to its term; God loves those of prudent fear.

اِلَّا الَّذ۪ينَ عَاهَدْتُمْ مِنَ الْمُشْرِك۪ينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـٔاً وَلَمْ يُظَاهِرُوا عَلَيْكُمْ اَحَداً فَاَتِمُّٓوا اِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ اِلٰى مُدَّتِهِمْۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّق۪ينَ

Illa allatheena AAahadtummina almushrikeena thumma lam yanqusookum shay-an walam yuthahirooAAalaykum ahadan faatimmoo ilayhim AAahdahum ilamuddatihim inna Allaha yuhibbu almuttaqeen

Save the idolaters with whom you made a covenant then who have not been deficient towards you in anything, nor assisted anyone against you; so fulfil to them your covenant to its term; God loves those of prudent fear.

And if they renege on their oaths after their covenant and revile your doctrine, then fight the leaders of denial: they have no oaths that they might desist.

Inna Allaha ishtara minaalmu/mineena anfusahum waamwalahum bi-anna lahumualjannata yuqatiloona fee sabeeli Allahifayaqtuloona wayuqtaloona waAAdan AAalayhi haqqan fee attawratiwal-injeeli walqur-ani waman awfabiAAahdihi mina Allahi fastabshiroo bibayAAikumuallathee bayaAAtum bihi wathalika huwaalfawzu alAAatheem

God has bought from the believers their lives and their wealth; for that the Garden is theirs — they fighting in the cause of God, killing and being killed — a promise binding upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur’an. And who better fulfils his covenant than God? Rejoice then in your bargain that you have contracted with Him; and that is the Great Achievement.

But those who break the covenant of God after its agreement, and sever what God has commanded to be joined, and work corruption in the land: those have the curse, and they have the evil abode.

So Moses returned to his people, wrathful and grieved. He said: “O my people: did not your Lord promise you a fair promise? Was the covenant long in coming for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord should descend upon you, so failed in your promise to me?”

Inna allatheena yubayiAAoonakainnama yubayiAAoona Allaha yadu Allahifawqa aydeehim faman nakatha fa-innama yankuthu AAalanafsihi waman awfa bima AAahada AAalayhu Allahafasayu/teehi ajran AAatheema

Those who swear fealty to thee but swear fealty to God; the hand of God is over their hands. Then whoso reneges, he but reneges against his soul. And whoso fulfils what he has taken upon him as a covenant to God, He will give him a great reward.

### 70. Surah Al-Ma'arij, Verse 32
